Developing the skills of talented youngsters as apprentice fabricator, Jordan Reed, becomes a full-time employee

I found out about the possibility of an apprenticeship with Watergate Flood Solutions via Rising Star, a youth recruitment and training business founded by Hebburn-based Zenith People.

The organisation helps young people like myself find employment – whether this is as a trainee, apprentice, work experience or as a full time employee.

Through discussions with a trainer, I became aware of an opportunity for a one year apprenticeship as a fabricator and I was keen to apply for the position.

Having met the team at Watergate, I was awarded the job. The year of training saw me focus on the practical skills and knowledge involved in the manufacturing process. I was assessed in the workplace and upon completion of the qualification I have become a full time employee.

In the space of a year I achieved an NVQ and have settled into a role that I really enjoy and with a company that looks after me well.

Rising Star was fantastic and I would urge any young person looking to get into the workplace to contact them. My trainer was very hands on, he would come into the workplace where I would undergo my coursework and check all of the quality procedures.

I now have a good understanding of the manufacturing process for the composite and PVCu flood defence doors and as part of my responsibility I help to put the gaskets into the doors as well as welding them before the silicon goes in. I also bead the frame which is the process of placing the panels into the door.

It goes to show that there are lots of opportunities out there if you have the ambition to achieve them and also a little luck!
